Historical and Genealogical Society Meeting

BROCKWELL — The Izard County Historical and Genealogical Society will meet at 2 p.m. at the Izard County Senior Center on Arkansas 9, south of Brockwell. George Lankford of Batesville will speak about the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission and how local groups throughout Arkansas can use the Sesquicentennial to consider issues of the Civil War.

Embroidery Workshop

POCAHONTAS — Davidsonville Historic State Park will offer an Introduction to Embroidery workshop Saturday. This trip back in time will offer students an opportunity to learn a variety of stitches and patterns. Attendees are asked to bring scrap fabric. The cost is $15. Variety Show and Art Exhibit

BATESVILLE — Sulphur Rock Magnet School will host a variety show and art exhibit at 6:30 p.m. at the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville. Teachers and students will perform. Admission is $5 for adults and free for students. There will be a silent auction on students’ art and donated art pieces. Proceeds will go to the Sulphur Rock Magnet School’s FANS Club.

Knitting Workshop

POWHATAN — Powhatan Historic State Park will hold a beginner’s knitting workshop from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost is $15 per person. Guest Artist Exhibit

ASH FLAT — Terri Jo Fowler is Guest Artist of the Month at the Ash Flat Public Library. Her work will be displayed through January, including oil paintings with themes ranging from rocks to shoes. She also paints pet portraits.

GED Test Schedule

MELBOURNE — The free GED test will be given at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 23 and 28 in Room 516 of the Wyth Duke Adult Education Building at Ozarka College in Melbourne. The test will also be given at Ozarka College in Mammoth Spring, 9 a.m. Tuesday and Jan. 22; Ozarka College in Ash Flat, 9 a.m. Wednesday and Jan. 23; the Courthouse in Salem, 9 a.m. Wednesday; Ozarka College in Mountain View, 9 a.m. Thursday and Jan. 29; and at City Hall in Calico Rock, 9 a.m. Jan. 24. Those taking the test must present an Arkansas photo ID, a Social Security card and proof of passing practice-test scores dated within the last year. Registration is required by calling Ozarka College at (870) 368-7371 or (800) 821-4335 before the day of the test.

Black History Month

POCAHONTAS — The Eddie Mae Herron Center and Museum will observe Black History Month throughout February with activities and events that will include hog butchering, quilting, food preparation and lectures. Author’s Presentation

BATESVILLE — John Hornor Jacobs, a Lyon College graduate and a novelist, will give a public interview and reading on the Lyon campus Feb. 5. MOUNTAIN VIEW — Ozark Folk Center State Park will offer a class on learning the tricks of cooking sweet — and healthy — treats. The recipes will include whole-grain cookies and fresh-fruit delight. The class will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 9 in the Smokehouse at the park. Attendees are asked to bring a brown-bag lunch to eat with the treats they prepare. The cost for the class is $30. Charity Bunko Bash

CABOT — The Junior Auxiliary of Cabot will hold a charity bunko bash at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 12 at the National Guard Armory, 103 Commerce Park Drive in Cabot, as part of a Mardi Gras celebration. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door. Proceeds will benefit programs that support kids in need in the Cabot School District. There will be food, door prizes and a silent auction.
