Police: Man used fraudulent credit card to steal bathtub

BETHESDA, Md. — Montgomery County police are asking for help identifying a man they say used a fraudulent credit card to steal an expensive bathtub.

Police say the man wanted to buy a $13,000 bathtub from Union Hardware in Bethesda that was on sale for $6,700 on April 26. The credit card he used was initially declined, but the man said he would call his bank to find out why.

Police say the man handed his cellphone to the employee, saying the bank would explain how to process the card. The employee followed the instructions and a receipt printed out as if the purchase was approved.

A short time after the man drove off with the tub, police say, the bank notified the store that the card was fraudulent.
