CAC hands eStem 1st loss in double overtime

University of Connecticut signee Christyn Williams and freshman Bethany Dillard combined for 52 points as Central Arkansas Christian held off previously undefeated eStem for a 76-71 double-overtime victory at the Arkansas School for the Deaf on Friday in Little Rock.

The Lady Mustangs (10-1, 4-0 4A-2) had a 44-35 lead after three quarters but eStem (10-1, 3-1) rallied in the fourth and took advantage of a last-second basket by Mariah Adams to send the game to overtime tied 57-57.

EStem's first loss weighed a little on Coach Joshua Hayes.

"The girls got accustomed to winning, and it took us a little while to get going," Hayes said.

And it wasn't just a slow start, he said.

"We were not fully focused, and the fouls bothered some of our girls," he said. "You get a lot of fouls and some of them back off and play soft."

The two teams matched each other point for point in the first overtime, but the Lady Mustangs had a shot to win at the buzzer but a long shot by Williams clanged off the back of the rim.

"We played really well," CAC Coach Steve Quattlebaum said. "We had a lead, and they let it get away. But they showed a lot of poise and character."

In the second overtime, CAC got off to a fast start when Williams converted on a three-point play after a foul by eStem's Alexandria Johnson.

Williams started a fast break with a block, then got the ball down the floor to Jenna Davis for an easy basket.

A three-pointer from Mariah Adams narrowed the margin to two points, but Williams then drove down the middle for a basket to push the lead back to four.

A three-point play from eStem's Makayla Miller made it 72-71 CAC with 1:21 remaining. Williams was fouled on the next trip down the floor and made two free throws to make it 74-71 with 1:07 left.

Dillard and Madyson Bowman each hit a free throw in the final 15 seconds to seal the victory.

Williams had 27 for CAC while Dillard added 25, and Davis chipped in 13. Adams had 25 for eStem and Miller had 22.
