HARVEST FOR THE HUNGRY

'Feeding' Foodbank

Family-friendly fundraiser benefits malnourished Arkansans

For the second year, Arkansas Foodbank opened its warehouse and loading dock for Harvest Night, a family-friendly fundraiser for the food bank. The Sept. 16 event was one of several sponsored by local nonprofits during Hunger Action Month.

Guests dined at long family-style tables in the warehouse, which was kept cool with giant overhead fans. Fare included heaping plates of barbecue, catfish and side items from Corky's Ribs & BBQ. Adult beverages were provided by Stone's Throw Brewing and Arkansas Craft Distributors. Also for grown-ups, there was a ring-toss game to win a bottle of wine. There were no losers, as participants were able to play until they won.

There was plenty to do outside, where guests enjoyed treats from Loblolly Creamery and Honey Pies, as well as a petting zoo, face painting, balloon animals, games and music.

Harvest Night was hosted by the Harvesters, Arkansas Foodbank's young professional group. Event chairmen were Robert and Haley Klein. The event raised more than $55,000, which will go toward "programs that feed the hungry and ensure children, families and senior [citizens] have access to healthy and nutritious food all year round," said communications director Tyler Lindsey.

The food bank works with a network of agencies to distribute donated and bought food directly to people who need food.
