Walmart Foundation to target food waste

The Walmart Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Walmart Inc., is making $1.5 million in grant funding available to Canadian nonprofits working to reduce food waste, according to a news release Monday.

The Bentonville foundation is seeking grant proposals from qualified organizations with experience in designing and implementing food waste reduction initiatives. The deadline to apply is Oct. 19.

The latest round of funding builds on the foundation's commitment to award a total of $15 million in grants to nonprofits working to cut food waste and strengthen food banks in Canada. Food waste in that country cost $31 billion in 2014, according to Value Chain Management International.

Walmart Inc. is working to achieve zero food waste in key markets by 2025. About one-third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted each year, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Program.
